Joshimath. The ongoing landslide crisis in Joshimath is not taking the name of abating. Here, the Joshimath-Auli ropeway has now come under threat, while the speed of two other big hotels situated a few meters away from it, has also increased towards each other. On the other hand, the process of demolition of the hotels ‘Malari Inn’ and ‘Hotel Mount View’, which are dangerously connected to each other in the upper part, is going on.
The four and a half kilometer long Joshimath-Auli ropeway is considered one of the largest ropeway projects in Asia, which connects Joshimath at 6,000 feet to Auli Skiing Center at 9,000 feet. Its operation has stopped for the last 10 days. Where the ropeway starts, it is connected to the dangerous areas. About half a kilometer directly below it is the same colony of Jaiprakash Company where the problem first surfaced on January 2. All the structures located above and below JP Colony are under the threat of landslide.
The land adjacent to the initial platform of the ropeway also burst
For the last three decades, Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam, a state government undertaking, is operating this ropeway. Engineer Dinesh Bhatt, the chief operator of the project, told the ‘News Agency’ that earlier there were minor cracks on the main building of the ropeway, from where the ropeway operated, but on Friday night the ground adjacent to the starting platform of the ropeway has burst. . He said that apart from this, till Saturday morning, a crack four to six inches wide, twenty feet long and four feet deep has appeared at some distance from the wall in the ropeway complex.
‘Snow crust’ and ‘Hotel Comet’ adjacent to the ropeway are also in danger of landslide.
The ‘Snow Crust’ and ‘Hotel Comet’ adjacent to this ropeway are also in the grip of landslides and have started sticking to each other, in view of which both the hotels have been evacuated. Pooja Prajapati, daughter of the hotel owner of ‘Snow Crust’ told that her hotel is leaning towards another hotel. He said that earlier there was a distance of four feet between the two hotels, which has now reduced to just one or two inches. Prajapati told that the administration team had come for the assessment on Saturday and also installed instruments at some places, but no instruments have been installed from where the hotel is leaning.
Hotel evacuated after landslide
Both the hotels have been evacuated after being hit by the landslide and their contents have been kept at safe places. Cracks have again increased at many places on Saturday night. Bhuvan Chandra Uniyal, who runs Hotel Panchavati in Sinhadhar ward, said that the cracks have widened since Saturday night. District Disaster Management Officer NK Joshi told that the work of survey of buildings is going on.
