New Delhi. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajeev Kumar said on Wednesday that the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held keeping in mind various factors, including weather and security concerns. Responding to a reporter’s question here about the possible timing of elections in the union territory, Kumar said wherever elections are to be held, it is the duty of the commission to ensure that the government is formed following due process.
He said that the process of delimitation has been completed in Jammu and Kashmir and similarly the voter list is being revised. The CEC said that returning officers and additional electoral registration officers have also been appointed in the reorganized and new constituencies. Kumar said elections should be held after the process is over and a decision will be taken keeping in mind the weather, security concerns and all other factors.
Everyone’s eyes are fixed on when the assembly elections will be held in Jammu and Kashmir. After the removal of Article 370 in 2019, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is waiting for the elections. Regional parties have also been demanding for the last several months to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and hold assembly elections. In such a situation, there is a possibility that elections can be held there soon.
Polling in Tripura on February 16 and Meghalaya, Nagaland on February 27
Meanwhile, the Election Commission on Wednesday announced the dates for the assembly elections in three northeastern states, sounding the alarm for the state elections to be held in the year 2023. In the first round of elections to be held this year, Tripura will go to polls on February 16, while Meghalaya and Nagaland will go to polls on a single day, February 27. The counting of votes in all the three states will take place on March 2.
The notification for the Tripura Assembly elections will be issued on January 21 and the last date for filing nominations will be January 30. The last date for withdrawal of nominations will be February 2 and polling will be held on February 16 and counting of votes will be done on March 2. Notification for the Meghalaya and Nagaland assembly elections will be issued on January 31 and the last date for filing nominations will be February 7, while the last date for withdrawal of nominations will be February 10. Polling will be held on February 27 and counting of votes will be done on March 2.
