New Delhi/Raipur. As the March 2026 deadline to end Naxalism in India approaches, security forces have started implementing a comprehensive action plan for the remote Abujhmad region of Chhattisgarh, under which the ITBP is setting up a strategic base in the area to curb Naxal activities. The 44th battalion of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) set up an operation base at Lanka village, about 140 km from Narayanpur district headquarters, on November 28.
A senior officer posted in Chhattisgarh told PTI, “This ITBP camp has been established in the forests of Abujhmad in the Bastar region of South Chhattisgarh and its location is very important from the strategic point of view, as it is just three kilometers away from the Chhattisgarh-Maharashtra border. On the other side is the Naxal-hit Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra.”
Abujhmad area is spread over about 4,000 square kilometers in Narayanpur district. Security agencies and the Chhattisgarh administration have classified it as a stronghold of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist). The dense forests of Abujhmad have been a haven for CPI (Maoist) workers and commanders. About 237 villages are located in these forests, in which about 35,000 people, mainly tribals, live.
Central and state police forces have made coordinated efforts to create a security base in the area, so that government machinery can be established there and development works can be initiated. “The Lanka ITBP base has effectively sealed the vital entry point for the Naxalites, disrupting their movement and supply chain between Gadchiroli in Maharashtra and Bijapur districts in Chhattisgarh,” the official said.
He said that this is the ninth such camp set up by ITBP in Abujhmad area in the last three months as part of a comprehensive action plan to reach deep into the Naxalite violence affected areas of the state. Other ITBP camps in Abujhmad area are located at Adjum, Idavaya, Adar, Kudmel, Jatalur, Dhobe, Dodi Marka and Padmetta.
Another official said that all these camps will also help the security forces in closing the corridor long used by the Naxalites between Telangana, Maharashtra and Abujhmad. He told that the Lanka Company Operating Base (COB) of ITBP is located opposite Bedre in Bijapur district, about six kilometers north of the Indravati River.
“This camp will help contractors and workers in the construction of the important but long-delayed bridge at Bedre, which will significantly reduce travel time in the area and make access to major villages of Abujhmad easier,” the official said. ITBP has deployed about eight battalions in Chhattisgarh for anti-Naxal operations.
