New Delhi. PM Narendra Modi expressed displeasure over the allegations of corruption and data manipulation in Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). The Prime Minister has given a clear and strict message to the officials that no culprit will be spared. According to central sources, orders were given to take immediate corrective steps in the states where irregularities have come to light in the mission. The Prime Minister has said that strict action will be taken against whoever is found involved in the irregularities. States were also instructed that no funds would be released to the mission until action against the culprits was completed. UP followed this and recovered 0.1% to 10% on contracts in 113 out of 119 cases, while in the remaining six cases the scope of the projects was reduced.
Funds will not be released until the action is completed
Prime Minister Modi has started strict action against irregularities in Jal Jeevan Mission. The Center took immediate corrective steps after finding fake data and irregularities in contracts in various states. Till now, a total of Rs 129 crore has been recovered and punitive action has been taken. The Center has directed all the states not to release funds until the action against the culprits is completed. With this step, transparency and accountability is being ensured in JJM. Central teams have asked all states to re-check data, verify contracts and increase monitoring of work on the ground. Documentary data alone will not be relied upon. This step ensures that the mission’s cosmetic figures now end and real, clean water reaches every village.
Effect of strictness visible
The effect of the Prime Minister’s strict stance is visible in the states also. Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Gujarat, Assam, Maharashtra and Karnataka have initiated rapid corrective action. While the process is still slow in Jharkhand, Kerala and West Bengal, the Center has warned those states that delays in transparency will not be tolerated. The Center has also directed the CBI and State Anti-Corruption Bureau to expeditiously investigate cases of manipulation. All the officers and contractors of the Mission have received a clear message that no irregularity in JJM will remain unresolved.
warning to corrupt people
The Prime Minister’s tough stance is not only a warning to the corrupt but it is also a decisive step towards making JJM not just a water scheme but a credible and transparent mission. Now, along with providing clean water to rural homes, the functioning of the mission has also come under complete scrutiny and monitoring.
