Rajasthan Royals batsman Sanju Samson hit the first century of IPL 2021. He is also the first player of the IPL to score a century in the first match as a captain. Samson scored 119 runs in 63 balls.
Prior to Samson, Shreyas Iyer played the biggest innings in the IPL as a captain’s debut match. In 2018, he scored 93 runs in 40 balls while captaining Delhi Capitals. Their 119 runs against Punjab is also the second highest individual innings in the IPL, chasing the target. The record of playing the biggest innings while chasing the target is in the name of Paul Valthaty. He scored 120 not out in 63 balls against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2011. An unsolicited record was also recorded in Samson’s name. He became the second batsman to score a century in an unsuccessful run chase in the IPL. Before him, Yusuf Pathan had scored a century against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2010. But his team was defeated.

Samson had three centuries in the IPL with an innings of 119 against Punjab. He also equaled the record of AB de Villiers. Samson and de Villiers have scored 3-3 centuries in the IPL so far. Chris Gayle holds the record for scoring the most centuries in the league. He has scored 6 centuries in the IPL. Virat Kohli is second in this case. He has scored 5 centuries in 193 matches. Samson is the Indian to score the most century in IPL after Virat. Apart from this, he also became the third batsman to complete 2 thousand runs in IPL for Rajasthan. Rajasthan Royals started off to chase the target of 222 runs to win the match. On the third ball of the first over, Mohammed Shami dismissed Ben Stokes (0). Manan Vohra (12) was dismissed by Arshdeep Singh. After falling two wickets for 25 runs, Sanju Samson and Jose Butler (25) added 45 runs for the third wicket. Butler hit four boundaries off Meredith’s four balls. After that Samson kept the team in the match by having a half-century partnership with Shivam Dubey (23) and Ryan Parag (25). In the final 5 overs, Rajasthan had to score 68 runs to win. 20 runs scored in the 16th over. Parag hit two and Samson hit a six. In the 17th over, Shami dismissed Parag and conceded just 8 runs. Had to score 40 runs for victory in the last 3 overs.

The 18th over of Rajasthan’s innings was bowled by Jhay Richardson. In this over, Sanju Samson scored 19 runs including one six and two fours. 21 runs were to be scored in the last two overs.
