Viral Video: The world does not call India the Land of Surprises for nothing. The experience of foreign tourist Alex at the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland further strengthens this fact.
We have been reading since childhood that India is known for the change in its language, dress and food at every short distance. But what happened with Alex was really different. Alex shared a funny reel on Instagram, the beginning of which looks quite normal.
Any tourist will feel at ease after seeing dishes like pork curry, dal makhani, butter chicken. But the real fun was ahead, when he scrolled down the menu.
The story completely changed as soon as I saw the next page. The menu had silkworm larvae, snails, spiders, grasshoppers, porcupine skin and the most shocking item, Cat Meat. Alex looked at the camera and said, “This is officially the craziest menu of my life.”

Then he jokingly asked, “Whoever is eating cats…what are you doing in life, friend?” The clip went viral and comments started pouring in. Someone wrote, “Welcome to Nagaland,” while someone said, “Visit Mao Market, you will find everything!”
What came as a surprise to Alex were the centuries-old food traditions of the local tribes. Such as insects as a natural protein source, snails which are seasonal food, as well as porcupine skins which are part of the local hunting culture. Apart from this, spiders and locusts are rich in nutrition.
Many tribes of the North-East live a lifestyle deeply connected to nature. For them, these dishes are not some unique experiment, but a part of everyday food. Alex’s reel just reminded us that India’s tastes are as different as its climate..
