Just before the beginning of the winter session of Parliament, cracks have become clearly visible in the opposition alliance India Bloc. On Monday morning, when Congress called a meeting with its allies and tried to prepare a common strategy, Trinamool Congress (TMC) did not attend the meeting. This has raised questions on opposition unity.
Why did TMC move away from India Bloc?
Party sources clearly said that when Congress is preparing to fight against TMC in the West Bengal Assembly elections, ‘what is the point of sharing the stage with them every time in Delhi?’ That means TMC has indicated that the political fight in Bengal will also affect their national strategy.
What is Congress’s plan on winter session?
Here, Congress held a meeting of its Parliamentary Strategy Group late on Sunday evening and decided that it will put the government in the dock in the winter session on issues like national security, recent blast in Delhi, electoral roll (SIR) and air pollution. Many top leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, P. Chidambaram were present in the meeting chaired by Sonia Gandhi.
But how effective this strategy of Congress will be, also depends on whether the opposition is able to unite and surround the government or not. And TMC staying away from the meeting indicates that the united voice of the opposition may weaken on the very first day.
Which bills will the government present?
In this winter session of Parliament, the government is going to present 13 big bills, of which the Central Excise Amendment Bill 2025 and Health Security-National Security Cess Bill 2025 are the most important. Apart from these bills, the opposition is preparing to create ruckus on the issues of SIR, air pollution and national security. But in the very first test of opposition unity, the India Bloc appeared to be falling apart. TMC’s signal is clear that where its regional interests are affected, it will not shy away from adopting the policy of ‘Go Alone’.
The political temperature has increased before the beginning of the winter session, and it seems that the tussle within the government as well as the opposition will keep the atmosphere of Parliament heated in the coming days.
