Due to the skyrocketing prices of vegetables during the festive season, the common consumer is facing a double whammy. In the last week of October, there was heavy rain in the urban suburban areas of the district. Due to the rain, the vegetable garden prepared at that time was completely damaged. In the heavy rain, the vegetable plants had rotted and were completely destroyed. Farmers have replanted vegetable plants, due to which the arrival of vegetables in the market is relatively less at present.
Cabbage price Rs 70 per kg
The direct effect of decrease in local arrivals in the market is visible on the prices of vegetables and the prices of vegetables have become expensive. For the last few days, the most expensive vegetable in the city’s main Budhwari market, Mudapar market and Itwari market is fenugreek bhaji, which is being sold at the rate of Rs 50 per pav i.e. Rs 200 per kg. The prices of parwal, desi bitter gourd and cauliflower have also increased from Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kg. Local vegetable traders told that due to rain there was huge damage to the vegetable crop. Due to which the entire crop was ruined. The farmers had again prepared vegetable gardens. But there is a delay in the arrival of produce due to which the arrivals have decreased. Due to weak arrivals the prices are rising.
Tomato being sold at three times the price
Vegetable sellers and buyers say that the arrival of local tomatoes starts in the month of November, but this year the arrival of local tomatoes has reduced. Due to which the tomato which was sold at Rs 20 per kg in the winter season last year is being sold at Rs 60 per kg in the market. Tomato, which enhances the taste of vegetables in winter, is becoming inaccessible to people. Buyers are also purchasing in less quantity.
Local arrivals will start after 15 days
Most of the villagers in rural areas are currently busy in harvesting and milling of paddy. Farmers are busy selling paddy at support price in procurement centres. The vegetable garden planted around Diwali is better at the moment, but it will take a few more days for the new crop of local vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, semi, fenugreek, spinach, radish, carrot, green peas, tomato etc. to reach the market. At present the weather is also clear, hence now farmers do not have much problem of pest attack. Farmers hope that after 15 days, bumper arrival of local vegetables will start, after which the prices of vegetables will also come down.
