Gorakhpur: These days the situation is changing rapidly in the old city of Gorakhpur. The work of building a heritage corridor in Reti Ghantaghar, Nakhas and surrounding streets has gained momentum. Where once the narrow streets full of small shops used to buzz with thousands of shoppers every day, today there is debris, machinery and broken buildings. If you are planning to go shopping in the old city these days, then proceed with caution, otherwise you may have to return empty handed.
some part is running closed
Due to the construction of the heritage corridor, a large part of the Ghantaghar and Nakhas area is currently closed. Many old houses and shops are being demolished, which has a direct impact on the businessmen and buyers here. Local shopkeeper Nazir says that his clothing shop has been closed for the last several days. People come and ask, brother, where is the market being held? But the truth is, the entire line is sealed and is not expected to reopen until the work is completed, he says.
The closure of the market has also affected the people of the city who come here to shop for festivals, weddings or for everyday needs. Many buyers come till Ghantaghar, but have to turn back when they see ‘No Entry’ and construction work in progress boards on the roads.
Shops have shifted here
However, the market has not disappeared completely. Shopkeepers have temporarily shifted their shops. If you want to make a purchase, you will get two options. First, ‘Masjid Wali Gali’, about 200 meters away from the clock tower, where shops of clothes, shoes, dupattas and everyday items already existed and are still running.
