The government believes that technology-based solutions can bring a big change in road safety. If this system is implemented, it will stop bike drivers from doing stunts and using mobile phones while driving.
New Delhi. A large number of road accidents occur every year in the country due to careless driving by two-wheeler drivers. Using mobile while performing stunts on the road and driving a scooter or bike are the main reasons for road accidents. Even fines and strictness of the traffic police have not been able to curb these irresponsible activities yet. This is the reason why the government is now emphasizing on finding a ‘technical solution’ to this problem.
According to a report in Times of India, the government wants companies to install touch or pressure sensors on both the handlebars of two-wheelers. The job of these sensors will be to check whether both the hands of the driver are on the handle or not. If the rider’s hands remain away from the handle for more than 7-8 seconds, the speed of the bike will automatically slow down. When this happens, the rider will be forced to drive the vehicle by holding the handle properly.
These figures worried the government
Government figures show that accidents caused by two-wheelers are continuously increasing. The number of deaths of two-wheeler drivers in 2021 was 69,385, which increased to 77,539 in 2023. This is about 45 percent of the total road accident deaths in the country. The Road Transport Ministry says that two-wheeler drivers are not only the biggest victims of road accidents but in many cases are also the biggest cause. In 2023, 48,181 people lost their lives due to careless driving by two-wheeler drivers.
Discussions continue with the industry
According to sources, the Transport Ministry has held a meeting with vehicle manufacturing companies regarding installing sensors on the bike handles. Officials believe that if vehicles themselves detect unsafe driving and respond quickly, risky behavior on the road could be significantly reduced. Driving while using mobile has become a serious problem in the country, especially among the youth, the trend of riding a bike with one hand has increased rapidly. In such a situation, this technology can prove to be very effective in reducing accidents.
