Bokaro: Even today, goat rearing is considered as the main livestock in rural areas, but due to lack of information, many cattle rearers buy unhealthy and sick goats, due to which they have to suffer financial losses later. In view of this problem, Dr. Anil Kumar, a veterinarian at Chas Pet Clinic, Bokaro, has told people special tips through which cattle rearers can choose healthy goats.
Check the breed and body conformation
Before buying a goat, it is important to thoroughly check its breed, lineage and physical structure because sick goats are usually lethargic and their behavior also appears abnormal. While to identify a healthy goat, the cattle rearer should thoroughly examine all four legs so that lameness and other problems can be detected, whereas in a goat standing in an abnormal manner, weakness or swelling in the legs can be a sign of disease.
Along with this, symptoms like dark yellow color in the goat’s eyes, continuous water flow from the nose and foul smell in the mouth also indicate the disease. Also, be sure to check the width around the waist of the goat, because this shows its fertility and physical strength.
At the time of purchasing the goat, check the udder carefully to see if there is any swelling, infection or wound. Sometimes goats face the problem of boils on their tongue due to which they are not able to eat properly and gradually become weak, hence the goat’s tongue should also look clean and healthy. To check for respiratory disease, pay attention to the goat’s breathing, because very fast breathing is the main symptom of respiratory disease.
stool examination necessary
Apart from this, you can check the goat’s stool, which can be a sign of some serious disease if it is watery, bloody or smelly. Apart from this, some precautions are necessary even after purchasing the goat, such as vaccination of the goat should be done on time and it is necessary to keep it separate from other goats for at least 14 days, so that the infection of any possible disease does not spread to other animals. Besides, it is also useful to disinfect the feet of the goat as per the advice of the veterinarian.
