America’s Royal Caribbean Cruise Company is embroiled in a major controversy. In December 2024, 35-year-old passenger Michael Virgil died on a ship named ‘Navigator of the Seas’. Now his family has filed a lawsuit against the company for wrongful death. The family alleges that Michael was served 33 drinks in a single night in the ship’s bar, which worsened his condition and led to his death. Michael’s fiancee, Connie Aguilar, claims that cruise staff did not return the ship to port after his death. Not only this, Michael’s body was kept in a refrigerator and the journey continued. After this thing came to light, people want to know that if someone dies while traveling at sea, what happens to his dead body on the ship?
Where is the body kept in case of death at sea?
According to the New York Post report, every major cruise ship has a hidden morgue, i.e. a separate room for keeping dead bodies, where entry of ordinary passengers is prohibited. These margs are usually built in the lower part of the ship, near the areas where the rest of the luggage, food, wine and other materials are kept. Not only this, there are racks in these rooms where dead bodies are kept in cold temperatures. Many ships are also equipped with body bags so that in the event of a passenger’s death, the body can be kept safe until the ship reaches a major port.
