Mater ki kheti: Hazaribagh’s agriculture expert Dr. Arvind Kumar Singh has given some tips to the farmers regarding the cultivation of peas in Hazaribagh. He said that timely sowing, seed treatment, light irrigation, organic fertilizers, pest control and drainage system leads to bumper production.
Pea cultivation is currently gaining momentum in Hazaribagh district. Many farmers have done advance sowing, which has been done for about 15 to 20 days. At the same time, some farmers are still preparing for sowing. In such times, it is important to know how to get better yields.
On this subject, Dr. Arvind Kumar Singh, agricultural scientist of ISECT University, Hazaribagh, has given many important suggestions to the farmers. He told that good yield of pea starts with sowing at the right time. There is good moisture in cold weather, hence the growth of plants is faster. Farmers who are sowing late should definitely do seed treatment so that the infection of diseases is reduced and germination can be strengthened.
He further said that light irrigation of the field after sowing is very beneficial. Due to this, the seeds germinate quickly and the roots spread well in the soil. If there is a possibility of frost in the field, then light irrigation keeps the plants safe from frost.

He further said that the first weeding should be done 20 to 25 days after sowing. This keeps weeds under control and plants get adequate nutrition. He also told that pea crop needs strong stem and more flowers, hence use of organic fertilizer or cow dung manure in the field.
While giving advice, he said that if the farmer wants, he can spray 2% DAP solution or 1% urea on the leaves. This keeps the crop green and increases the ability to form pods. However, excessive nitrogen should not be used, because due to this the plants become more leafy and less pods are produced.
Protection from pests in the crop is also important. Thrips and aphids cause great harm to pea plants. To control these, neem solution should be sprayed or recommended medicine should be used if necessary. The crop remains safe by timely spraying.
He also said that the pea crop always needs moisture, but there should not be water stagnation. Due to stagnation of water, root rot and fungal diseases increase. Therefore, there should be good drainage system in the field.
