Kitchen Garden Tips: Now you can cultivate expensive almonds even in pots at home. Almond plant can be easily grown at home with the right soil, suitable pot, balanced fertilizer and a little care. Know every important solution related to planting seeds, fertilizer, water and sunlight from gardening expert Mohammad Alam.
Kitchen Garden Expert Mohd. Alam told that for growing almonds in pots, do not use ‘roasted’ almonds available in the market. You should take ‘raw almonds’. Soak the seeds in water for 24 to 48 hours. After this, wrap them in a wet cloth and keep them in the refrigerator for a few days so that the process of germination can start.
The roots of almonds go deep, so choose the pot wisely. Initially you can take a pot of 12-14 inches, but as the plant grows, you will have to shift it to a larger container of 20-24 inches. Keep in mind that there should be enough holes in the bottom of the pot for drainage, otherwise the roots may rot.
Friable and drained soil is most suitable for almonds. For this, mix 50% normal garden soil, 25% cocopeat and 25% old cow dung manure or vermicompost. This mixture maintains moisture in the soil but does not allow water to stagnate, due to which the plant grows faster.

Press the germinated seeds 1-2 inches deep into the soil and water lightly. However, according to experts, it takes a lot of time for the seeds to bear fruit. Therefore, if you want early fruits, then you should buy ‘grafted plant’ of almond from a good nursery and plant it. It gets planted easily in the pot.
Almond plant is in dire need of good sunlight. Keep the pot in that part of the house where it gets direct sunlight for at least 5 to 6 hours a day. Be careful while watering, water only when the top layer of soil looks dry. Excessive watering can damage the roots of the plant.
To keep the plant healthy, add a handful of organic fertilizer to it every month. Prune the plant once a year so that new branches can grow. The grafted plant planted in a pot starts producing fruits within 2 to 3 years. When the upper green peel of the almond dries and starts cracking, then understand that the almond is ready to be plucked.
