New Delhi. At present, about Rs 2.75 lakh crore is deposited in the Jan Dhan accounts of the country. This was told by M Nagaraju, Secretary, Department of Financial Services, in the program of Administrative Staff College of India ASCI, Hyderabad. He said that on an average about Rs 4815 is kept in a Jan Dhan account.
According to Nagaraju, since the launch of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, a large number of people have joined the formal banking system and now more than 57 crore accounts have been opened under this scheme.
What is Jan Dhan Yojana and when was it started?
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana was launched in August 2014. Its objective was that every family in the country could be connected to at least one bank account so that the money from government schemes could reach the people directly. Under this scheme, zero balance accounts are opened and basic facilities like debit card, overdraft facility and accident insurance are also provided along with the account.
In the last few years, Jan Dhan accounts have played a big role in connecting the rural and poor sections with the banking system. The government believes that this has increased the habit of saving among the people and brought transparency in financial transactions.
Large share of rural areas and women
Nagaraju said that about 78.2 percent of Jan Dhan accounts are in rural or semi-urban areas. Apart from this, about 50 percent of the accounts are opened in the names of women. He believes that this has strengthened the banking access of rural families and women.
Money reaching account directly from DBT
He also informed that in the current financial year, Rs 3.67 lakh crore has been sent directly to the accounts of the beneficiaries under Direct Benefit Transfer DBT. Through DBT, the amount of government schemes reaches the account directly without any interruption, which saves time and maintains transparency in the process.
Journey to Financial Inclusion
In the program, Nagaraju said that India’s financial inclusion journey is continuously progressing and Jan Dhan Yojana has become an important foundation in it. He said that with a large number of countrymen joining the banking system, both government services and financial transactions have become easier.
