Rupee Weakness Effect: The rupee is continuously falling against the dollar, but do you know that it will have a direct impact on your pocket as well. If your child is studying in America, his expenses may increase by lakhs of rupees.
New Delhi. Everyone is keeping an eye on the ongoing tussle between the dollar and the rupee, but do you know that not only the economy but your pocket may also have to bear the brunt of the fall in the rupee. Especially if your child is studying in America, the impact of the fall in the rupee against the dollar will be clearly visible. You might not have guessed yet that due to this decline, your child’s education expenses may increase by lakhs of rupees.
In fact, the rupee has now gone below the level of 91 against the dollar. So far in the year 2025, there has been a decline of more than 6 percent. This decline simply means that now you may have to spend Rs 91 in exchange for 1 dollar. Obviously, if your child is studying in America, then all his expenses including accommodation and food may increase. The reason for this is that if you send money from here too, it will be in rupees and only after getting it converted into dollars in America, the child will be able to use it for expenses. Experts say that this decline will not improve until the trade agreement between America and India is completed.
Rupee will remain weak further
Bloomberg has said in its recent report that even though the Reserve Bank has sold dollars to stop the falling rupee, most experts believe that the Indian currency will continue to weaken in the future. Its effect will be directly visible on those things which are purchased by converting rupees. However, due to strengthening of dollar, IT and pharma sector will also benefit, but this need can be a cause of trouble for your children studying abroad.
How much will it affect your pocket?
The weakness of the rupee will become a problem for those students who study abroad. Now assuming a 6 percent decline in the year 2025, tuition fees alone will increase by 3.3 percent, which is an average of 55 thousand dollars. Now estimate the expenditure which comes to about 15 thousand dollars annually, then an increase of 6 percent in it can create an additional expenditure of about 81 thousand rupees in your pocket.
How much will the total expenses increase?
If we calculate on the basis of fall in rupee against dollar, it becomes clear that the cost of studying in America will now increase by about Rs 4.11 lakh annually. This also includes your tuition fee of 55 thousand dollars. This difference will come due to currency exchange, where now you will have to spend more rupees to buy dollars. Although this figure of expenditure may vary from case to case, it is certain that for an average lifestyle, there will definitely be an additional burden of around Rs 4 lakh if the dollar strengthens.
