Unique Tradition: In ancient times, when there were no roads in the mountains and traveling was very difficult, then Dolly used to be the main means of transportation for the people. After marriage, the responsibility of taking the bride from her maternal home to her in-laws’ house was the responsibility of her brothers and male members of the family, who would walk several kilometers carrying the doli on their shoulders.
Bageshwar: Despite the increasing influence of technology, roads and modern means of transportation, some traditions in the hill culture of Kumaon still work to connect hearts. One of these is the age-old tradition of sending the bride off in a doli, which is still followed with full respect, love and emotions in many areas of Kumaon. In olden times, when there were no roads in the mountains and traveling was very difficult, the handcart was the main means of transport for the people. After marriage, the responsibility of taking the bride from her maternal home to her in-laws’ house was the responsibility of her brothers and male members of the family, who would walk several kilometers carrying the doli on their shoulders.
Pandit Hem Chandra Pathak told Local 18 that at that time it was not just a compulsion but was considered a symbol of protection and respect for the sister. Brother used to carry the palanquin on difficult hilly roads and ensure safe departure of sister. Times changed, roads were built, vehicles came, but the emotional importance of this tradition is still equally deep. This is the reason why many families in Kumaon consider it necessary to see off the bride’s doli on the wedding day, despite modern facilities.
respect for tradition continues
The brothers and relatives carrying the doli describe this moment as an emotional experience associated with pride and affection. In many places, this distance is now covered symbolically for a few kilometres, but respect for tradition remains intact. Local people say that Doli Vidai is not just a ritual, but it is a cultural heritage showing the unwavering love between a sister and brother. The mixed emotions on the face of the bride sitting in the doli – the sorrow of farewell, the excitement of the new home and the affection of the brothers – deepen the sensitivity of the hill society.
Tradition is followed decades ago
Even today, in many villages of Kumaon including Bageshwar, Champawat, Pithoragarh, this tradition is followed with the same devotion as it was performed decades ago. Even amidst the changing times, this cultural heritage is working to connect the society to its roots. This unique ritual of Doli farewell in Kumaon still remains a living identity of the mountain civilization, collectivism and family values.
