Winter Plant Care Tips: Hibiscus plant becomes weak in winter in Nagaur, due to which its flowers and leaves get affected. According to experts and gardeners, it can be kept healthy by adopting some home remedies. Hibiscus care has become easy with simple methods like regular watering, light fertilizer and protection from cold.
As soon as winter begins, the hibiscus plant stops its normal growth. This plant, which gives flowers continuously in summer and rainy season, shrinks in cold, due to which new buds stop forming. As soon as the temperature decreases, its roots become hard and the flow of nutrients slows down. In such a situation, yellowing of leaves, bending of the plant and halting growth become common problems.
There are three main reasons behind the yellowing of hibiscus leaves. Which includes cold, humidity and less sunlight. The roots shrink in cold, due to which the plant is not able to absorb water and nutrients properly. Due to this, the old leaves first turn yellow and start falling. If the soil remains continuously wet, fungus forms in the roots and yellowing of the leaves increases rapidly. This situation is a sign of lack of care. Although slight yellowing is considered normal, continuous loss of leaves indicates that the plant needs immediate proper care.
In winter, hibiscus needs 6 to 7 hours of continuous and strong sunlight. If the plant does not get sunlight, it stops forming new buds completely. This problem is more visible in houses where there is less sunlight in the balcony or courtyard. Expert Ramnivas Chaudhary says that it is best to keep the plant in the south or south-east. If sunlight is limited, then the plant should be kept in a place with strong sunlight for a few hours two to three times a week. Due to which the lack of sunlight is compensated.

In winter, the soil dries up late, hence the biggest mistake is in watering. If the soil of hibiscus remains continuously wet, the roots start rotting and the leaves start falling. Therefore, during cold weather, watering should be done only 1 to 2 times a week. Before watering, check the top 1 to 2 inch layer of soil with your hand. Water it only if it seems dry. If the soil remains wet along with yellow leaves of the plant, do not water the plant.
As the cold increases, the soil becomes solid, due to which the roots are unable to get air. Therefore, it is necessary to loosen the top layer of soil gently every 10 to 12 days. If white fungus is seen in the soil, remove it immediately and sprinkle some neem powder on top. Neem balances the moisture of the soil and prevents fungal growth. This provides energy to the roots again and the plant gradually starts moving towards improvement even in cold weather.
Giving heavy fertilizer in winter can be harmful for hibiscus. Therefore, light and slowly dissolving fertilizers are best. Home kitchen compost is the safest option for winter. By adding two to three handfuls in a month, the plant gets slow and balanced energy. Apart from this, dry powder of banana peel also provides potassium to the plant, which strengthens the leaves. Neem cake powder not only nourishes the plant but also protects the soil from pests. With these light fertilizers the plant remains healthy even in winter.
Jaggery water is considered a natural micro-nutrient booster for hibiscus. Mixing one spoon jaggery in one liter of water and pouring it on the plants once a month increases the microbial activity of the soil. It provides warmth to the roots and accelerates the absorption of nutrients. This reduces the lethargy of the plant and it starts remaining active despite the cold. Many gardeners call it the most effective home solution for winter.
