Highlights

  • Paul Valthati scored an unbeaten 120 in 63 balls in the 2011 IPL.
  • Despite the great performance, Valthati did not get a chance in the Indian team.
  • Valthati’s career went into oblivion due to injury and poor performance.

New Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a format that made many players an overnight star and made them rich. In 2008, when Mahendra Singh Dhoni was bought for Rs 9.5 crore, it was not less than a sensation. After 18 years, this amount has reached 27 crores. The IPL gave many players a platform to reach international cricket, especially in India, where the selectors started giving the players a chance in Team India on the basis of performance in this league.

But every player’s luck was not so good. There were some who scored a century in the IPL, but still they never got a chance to play in international cricket. One such name is Paul Valthati.

That yagadar innings
In the 2011 IPL, Valthati created a stir in the cricket world with his quick batting. Playing for Kings XI Punjab, he scored 120 not out in 63 balls at the grounds of Mohali. In this innings, he hit 19 fours and 2 sixes, and rained runs at a strike rate of 190. Paul Valthati scored a century off 52 balls. But despite such a great performance, Valthati never got a place in the Indian team.

Strong performance in IPL, still oblivion
In the 2011 IPL, Valthati scored 463 runs in 14 matches at an average of 35.61 and a strike rate of 136.98. But in 2013, he flopped badly and could not touch the double figure even once in 6 innings. After this, Kings XI Punjab dropped him. Due to continuous poor performance, he remained unsold in the auction since 2014 and his journey in IPL ended.

Missing cricket after a bright innings
A century in IPL is a big achievement for every batsman, especially when so much explosive batting was not common in T20 cricket in the 2011 era. But Valthati’s story proves that just one innings cannot change the career of a player. Despite a banging century in the IPL, he never got a chance in international cricket, and his career slowly went into oblivion.

The biggest blockage became an injury
Paul Valthati got a chance to play in the 2002 Under-19 World Cup. The team also included players like Irfan Pathan and Parthiv Patel. But in a match against Bangladesh, he suffered a serious eye injury, due to which he got away from cricket for a long time.

Such a chance in IPL
After this, he could not make his place in the senior team of Mumbai. Rajasthan Royals bet on him in 2009, where he got a chance to play a few matches. Later he played some great innings in the Mumbai T20 team, which included him in his team in 2011 by Kings XI Punjab.
