Hearing has started in the Supreme Court on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the Election Commission. Hearing on the petition of Kerala government started before the bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymala Bagchi. Senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi started presenting his side and made sharp attacks on the EC. Singhvi said that the EC has no right to make rules and there is a danger of names of lakhs of voters being deleted from the SIR. The court also discussed the petitions of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry, where the EC has been given time to file counter affidavits.
An important hearing is taking place in the Supreme Court today. The EC has been directed to file a reply on the Kerala government’s petition before the bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymala Bagchi. During the hearing, the SC had directed the EC to file a counter affidavit by December 1. Kerala has demanded postponement of SIR, while the debate on the petitions of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry is also going on. Opposition parties have called it a conspiracy to remove lakhs of names from the voter list. At the same time, on the opposition’s allegation, the EC has called it ‘cleanliness of the electoral process’.
The Kerala government argues that SIR will affect local body elections (till December 21). Whereas in Tamil Nadu, DMK, CPI(M) and other parties have termed SIR as ‘unconstitutional’. TMC MP Dola Sen and Congress have filed a petition in West Bengal, where the issue of alleged suicides of BLOs has been raised. Even in Puducherry, local parties are opposing SIR.
