Cheese with high fat and salt is often considered harmful for health. But a recent research has said that some high fat items can be beneficial for brain health.
Cheese is generally considered to be high in fat and sodium, which can cause health problems like high cholesterol and high blood pressure. But recent research has shown that some high-fat cheeses can help reduce the risk of dementia.
In this research published in the science journal ‘Neurology’, not only high-fat cheeses like cheddar, brie, gouda, but also milk products like whipping cream, double cream and clotted cream were included. Researchers found that all these are associated with a reduced risk of dementia.
This research was done by researchers from Lund University, Sweden. He studied the health data of 27,670 people. The average age of the people involved at the beginning of the research was 58 years. He was continuously monitored for about 25 years. A total of 3,208 people suffered from dementia in this long-term study.
According to research, the risk of dementia was found to be 13 percent less in those who ate high-fat cheese compared to those who ate less cheese. Especially, in vascular dementia caused by blood vessels, this risk was reduced by 29 percent.
Research has also shown that the risk of Alzheimer’s was less in those people who ate high-fat cheese. But this benefit was seen only in those people who did not have the genetic variation called APOE e4. This APOE e4 gene is considered a major risk factor for Alzheimer’s. Nevertheless, researchers make an important point. ‘This study does not prove that eating high-fat cheese or cream directly reduces dementia. ‘It only shows the connection between them’, he warned.
This means that there may be a relationship between eating some high-fat cheeses and reducing the risk of dementia, this is the initial result of this research. But, to confirm the relationship between cause and effect, it is necessary to do more in-depth research. Therefore, experts say that instead of believing that high fat content is good for the brain, the best way is to follow a balanced and limited diet.
