As soon as winter sets in, Indian kitchens automatically turn to dishes that keep the body warm from within. Among these traditional dishes, gum laddus are considered the most special. These laddus, based on grandmother’s remedies, post-delivery care and childhood winters, are not just sweets but are a kind of functional food, which provides strength and protection to the body in the cold weather.
Ayurvedic expert of Palamu district, Shiv Kumar Pandey told that gum, which is also called edible gum, is obtained from the acacia tree. When it is fried in ghee, it swells and becomes light and crispy, making it easily digested. In Ayurveda and traditional home knowledge, gum is considered to increase strength. Its warm nature helps in protecting the body from stiffness, weakness and cold in winter.
He further said that gum laddus are made from edible gum, pure ghee, wheat flour and dry fruits. Spices like dry ginger and cardamom are added to these, which not only keep the body warm but also help in digestion. All these elements together provide energy to the body gradually and keep it active for a long time.

Further said that making gum laddus is not difficult. First of all, gum is fried in ghee on low flame to make it crisp and then lightly crushed. Fry wheat flour in the same ghee until it turns golden. Then chopped almonds, cashew nuts, magaj, dry coconut and crushed gum are mixed in it. Switch off the flame and when the mixture cools down a bit, add jaggery or sugar, dry ginger and cardamom and tie hot laddus. These can be preserved for a long time in an airtight container.
He further said that gum laddus help in increasing the strength and stamina of the body. These laddus are given to women after illness, weakness or delivery because they provide energy for a long time. Their warm nature keeps the body warm from inside in winter. The nutrients present in gum and dry fruits strengthen joints and bones and provide relief from pain in winter.
He said that although gum laddus are considered heavy, spices like dry ginger and cardamom make their digestion easier. These laddus provide energy not immediately but gradually, which reduces winter fatigue and lethargy.
He said that one gum laddu daily is sufficient. These should not be eaten like sweets, but like nutritious home tonics. Sometimes the most effective health formula is the one that has been used safely in the recipes of our grandmothers for generations.
