Vodafone Idea share- Vodafone Idea can get big relief from the government on AGR dues. Vodafone Idea’s AGR liability by 2025 is around ₹80–85,000 crore.
New Delhi. There is a lot of buzz in Vodafone Idea shares today due to the news of the possibility of getting a moratorium of up to 5 years on Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR). In early trade, Vodafone Idea shares jumped by 3 percent and reached Rs 12.03. However, this momentum did not last and then it started trading with a fall of 0.60 percent. This share had closed at Rs 11.64 in the last trading session. Economic Times had reported in one of its reports that the government is considering giving the company an interest-free moratorium of four to five years on the pending dues of more than ₹ 83,000 crore related to AGR. After the end of the moratorium period, the company will have to pay the outstanding amount in six installments. The report also states that after revaluation of liabilities, the AGR outstanding amount will be reduced to half.
In November 2025, giving a big relief to Vodafone Idea, the Supreme Court had allowed the Central Government to review and adjust the pending AGR dues of the company. The court had clarified that this review would not be limited only to AGR dues for the financial year 2016–17. It is noteworthy that under the current schedule, Vodafone Idea has to pay AGR installments from March 2026. Payment is to be made in a total of 6 installments, in which the first installment alone amounts to around ₹ 18,000 crore.
Interest and penalty may be waived
The Economic Times report states that a high-level committee will decide the final AGR liability in consultation with the Telecom Ministry and Vodafone Idea. This committee will be headed by a secretary level officer. It is expected that in this review, a large part of the interest and penalty on the company’s liability can be waived. The most important thing is that once the AGR amount is sealed, no further compound interest will be charged on it. This means that whatever amount is decided, it will have to be paid in installments as the principal amount. If this happens then it will be a matter of great relief for Vodafone Idea.
How much AGR is due on Vodafone-Idea?
Industry estimates are that Vodafone Idea’s AGR liability by 2025 is around ₹80–85,000 crore. If the government re-evaluates it, it may come down to around ₹ 40-45,000 crore.
Why can Vodafone Idea get relief in AGR?
Vodafone Idea has made it clear that without AGR relief, it will be difficult for the company to survive after FY26. On the other hand, the government wants that the 3-player structure in the telecom sector i.e. the services of Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea should remain in the country. The government owns about 49% in Vi. In such a situation, the sinking of the company will have a direct impact on the government treasury and the banking system.
TGH can invest
Last month, the Economic Times had reported in one of its reports that American private equity firm Tillman Global Holdings (TGH) is planning to invest 4 to 6 billion dollars (about ₹ 35,000 to ₹ 52,800 crore) in Vodafone-Idea. According to the report, this deal is possible only if the Government of India agrees to provide a comprehensive relief package on all dues of Vodafone-Idea, which includes liabilities like AGR and spectrum payments. Tillman Global Holdings is an American private equity firm that invests in digital and energy transition infrastructure. The chairman and CEO of the company is Sanjay Ahuja.
