Surgery for Diabetes in AIIMS Delhi: Till now you have heard that once someone gets diabetes, it will remain for life and it cannot be completely cured. It can be controlled only through medicine, exercise or changing lifestyle, but AIIMS New Delhi has not only proved this completely wrong, but has also given great relief to diabetic patients by finding a permanent cure for type-2 diabetes. Now it can be completely cured through surgery. In the last one year, the surgery department of AIIMS New Delhi has performed surgery on 30 such patients suffering from uncontrolled type-2 diabetes and freed them from the disease.
People in India are facing two types of epidemics, the first is diabetes and the second is uncontrolled diabetes due to which vital organs of the body like kidney, heart etc. organs fail, dangerous diseases like heart attack, brain hemorrhage, brain stroke, paralysis, diabetic retinopathy, gangrene can occur. At the same time, if there is any other disease, it cannot be cured quickly due to diabetes.
A sure cure for diabetes has been found in AIIMS, this disease can be cured through surgery. AIIMS surgeon Dr. Manjunath giving information.
Dr. Manjunath, Additional Professor in the Department of Surgery, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi It is said that regarding the treatment of diabetes, many people think that if the sugar level is increasing or decreasing then it should be kept normal through medicine, but in reality this is not a treatment. Treatment of diabetes means that major damage caused by diabetes such as organ failure or damage can be prevented. Whereas in India, the sugar level of many patients is not controlled even after taking three pills and the cases of organ failure are increasing.
However, now the good news is that diabetes which is not controlled even after taking sugar medicines, lifestyle or regularizing the diet, can now be cured by surgery. This surgery also reduces obesity and eliminates diabetes, because obesity and diabetes are two sides of the same coin.
Diabetes of 30 patients was cured by surgery
Dr. Manjunath says that in the last one and a quarter year, central obesity i.e. abdominal surgery has been done on 120 patients in AIIMS, out of which 30 percent were patients whose sugar was uncontrolled. One of these patients, MP, had BMI 27 and HbANC 11.7. Fasting sugar was more than 300 and sugar level after eating was 390. After suffering from type 2 diabetes for about 10 years, the MP underwent surgery on his stomach and intestines. Now his sugar is completely normal for the last 5 months. Diabetes is gone.
How is the surgery done?
With this surgery of stomach and intestines, both obesity and diabetes are cured.
The doctor told that this surgery is not done on the pancreas, but on the stomach and intestines. Through this metabolic surgery, the size of the stomach is reduced to a cylinder shape and the small intestine is attached to it, so whatever food is eaten bypasses the duodenum and goes directly into the intestine.
What is the benefit of surgery?
Due to this, hormones like GLP-1 etc. are released which along with promoting insulin, keeps blood sugar, triglycerides, lipid profile, protein urea etc. normal and keeps the overall metabolic health fine. This is the reason why diabetes is cured by this.
Can all diabetes patients undergo surgery?
However, regarding surgery, Dr. Manjunath clarifies that neither every diabetes patient needs surgery nor does it work on all patients. This surgery is for those patients when diet, lifestyle and medicines are not working and the blood sugar level is not being controlled. If a patient is not able to normalize blood sugar even after taking 3-4 sugar pills for 2 years, then this surgery is not only beneficial for the uncontrolled diabetic patient but is also very important.
Diabetic people whose HbVnc remains up to 6 or 6.5 do not need this surgery, they can maintain their sugar level by adjusting medicine, diet and lifestyle. Apart from this, if a patient has diabetes for 25 years and is taking 100 units of insulin, then the cells inside him have been destroyed, if 10 or 5 percent of the cells are left, then this surgery is not effective for such patients.
Type 2 diabetes can be cured with surgery.
Dr. Manju says that this surgery is necessary for those diabetic people who have diabetes for 8-10 years and it is uncontrolled despite taking medicines, then they can undergo this surgery and avoid organ damage.
Global guidelines also accept surgery as treatment
Let us tell you that in 2016, the Global Guidelines have also accepted that this surgery is not only for obesity but it also treats type 2 diabetes. The International Diabetes Federation has formally recognized that metabolic surgery can cure uncontrolled diabetes. However, there are some people who have taken the benefit of this surgery for the treatment of diabetes even without obesity.
