Lemongrass is being cultivated on 100 acres of land in the remote hilly and forest area of ​​Gaya district. Due to this the farmers are getting good income. Its cultivation has been started in Barachatti, Gurua and Bankebazar block area. The cultivation of lemongrass was started mainly in Barachatti block for the eradication of opium.

Seeing the success of lemongrass cultivation, the district administration is now emphasizing on increasing the area under lemongrass cultivation. Farmers are getting profit from the oil prepared from lemongrass. The price of one liter of oil in the market is around Rs 1,500, by cultivating one acre, farmers save up to Rs one lakh.

Talking to News 18 Local, District Agriculture Officer Sudama Mahato said that 3,237 acres of cultivable land in Gaya is barren where lemongrass cultivation is being prepared. Farmers have been sent out for training for its cultivation. Along with this the school has been run. Its usefulness has been told to the farmers. Today farmers are cultivating lemongrass on barren land. Farmers are getting profit of about one lakh rupees from one acre of cultivation. Farmers are very excited about this. The effect of this is that where earlier farmers were skeptical, today hundreds of farmers are ready to cultivate it. In the coming days, this will increase the income of the people and provide employment.

There is a huge demand for lemongrass oil in the domestic and international markets. Powerful and medicinal properties are found in lemongrass oil. By applying this, the skin gets benefited. Lemongrass oil is shiny and light yellow in color. Lemongrass oil has a storehouse of many medicinal properties like antioxidant, antiinflammatory and antifungal, using which tension, swelling, stress, depression, pain etc. can be reduced from the body. More than 70 percent citral is found in lemongrass oil. Vitamin A is made from this citral.

Various cosmetic products, sanitizer, phenyl, toilet cleaner and cosmetic soap, talcum powder, face powder, cream etc. are made from lemongrass oil. Through the Spirit and Agriculture Department, preparations are underway to train the women of Bankebazar on these lemongrass-based products, especially on the manufacture of phenyl, sanitizer and cosmetic soap. This will give a boost to the lemongrass based cottage industry in the coming days. Along with this, the income of women can be increased by making soap and sanitizer from lemongrass.
