Google is now preparing to extend the live translation feature to more people with the help of its Gemini AI. Till now this feature was limited only to Pixel Buds, but now Google is going to make it available on any headphones with microphone. This new feature is currently rolling out in beta version and has been added directly to the Google Translate app.
Google says that the purpose of this update is to make real-time language translation easy and convenient for everyone. This means that now people speaking different languages will be able to talk to each other easily, that too without any special device.
How does this feature work?
This live translation feature is based on Gemini’s speech-to-speech AI technology. It does not just translate words, but understands the meaning and context of what the other person is saying. This makes the translation seem more natural and conversation-like.
According to Google’s VP (Product & Search) Rose Yao, Gemini also understands idioms and emotional sentences correctly. For example, if someone says a phrase like ‘stealing my thunder’, Gemini won’t translate it verbatim, but will show the exact meaning.
How to use?
- It is quite easy to use this feature.
- Connect your headphones to the Android phone.
- Open the Google Translate app.
- Tap on ‘Live Translate’ button
After this the app will listen to the voice from the microphone of the headphones and immediately show the audio and translation on the screen.
Which devices will be supported?
According to Google, this feature supports more than 70 languages. This will work on almost all headphones, they just need to have a microphone. Currently, this feature is available in beta form in America, India and Mexico and is currently only for Android devices.
iPhone users will have to wait a bit for this, because Google is planning to bring it for iOS in 2026.
It makes sense that this feature moving beyond Pixel Buds to third-party headphones takes Google closer to universal live translation, which could prove to be extremely useful for travelers, students, and multi-language conversationalists.
