Khairagarh News: A mysterious incident has increased people’s concern in the last 15 days in Khairagarh, Chhattisgarh. Something strange is happening, especially with the girl students, in the Government Primary School Khairbana under Chhuikhadan development block of the district. Everyone from parents to administration is shocked. As soon as they reach school, the girls’ health suddenly starts deteriorating. Some feel dizzy, some fall unconscious. So far, 20 to 25 girl students have been affected, while the health of the girls living at home has become completely normal.
Despite the daily medical camps being organized by the health department teams, the reason is not clear, due to which this case is pointing towards ‘mass hysteria’ (collective mental effect). The incident began in late November, when some girl students complained of headache and vomiting at the school gate. Gradually this number increased. Now 20-25 girls from class 1 to 5 are affected. Doctors did not find any signs of physical illness or toxic substances in blood tests, heart rate tests and other primary tests.

The mother of an affected student said, “The daughter is fine at home, but she starts getting nervous at the mention of school. She fainted yesterday too, but the doctors found nothing.” Parents are worried and many have stopped sending children to school, affecting attendance.

Realizing the seriousness of the matter, the Collector visited the school. He inspected the premises. Talked to the affected girl students. Had a meeting with health department officials. The Collector instructed the BMO to conduct a psychological examination immediately. “This does not seem to be a normal problem. The physical examination is normal, so focus on the mental aspect. Call a team of experts and organize a counseling session for the children.” The district administration also advised the school management to increase sports activities to reduce stress in classes.
A classic case of ‘mass hysteria’
Meanwhile, CO District Panchayat Khairagarh Prem Kumar Patel said that according to health experts, this is a classic case of ‘mass hysteria’. This is a psychological phenomenon, where seeing the symptoms of one child affects others. Fear, exam stress or some rumor could be the reason for this. Similar incidents have happened in Meghnagarh and other rural schools in Chhattisgarh in the past, which were found to be linked to mass fear. Doctors believe that it can be controlled with early intervention. At present, the health department has started counseling along with anti-anxiety medicines. Medical team has been deployed.
