Berlin. Police in western Germany detained Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and other protesters near an opencast coal mine on Tuesday. Here these people were protesting against the demolition of a village to make way for the expansion of the mine. Hundreds of people protesting against mining in several locations in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia were among the last two climate activists to have holed up in a tunnel in the low-lying village of Luetzerth.
Police spokesman Christoph Huls told CNN on Tuesday that this is the second time Thunberg has been detained at the site. While hundreds of other protesters joined a protest march near Luetzerath. Greta Thunberg arrived in western Germany to take part in weekend demonstrations against the expanded mine and joined Tuesday’s protest near Luetzerath.
Police said a group of about 50 protesters had reached dangerously close to the rim of the mine. Police said that everyone in that group had to be taken away from the edge of the mine and then kept in temporary custody to determine their identity.
