A new and big war has broken out in the country’s politics over ‘history’. The Modi government has asked the Gandhi family to return all the documents of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, which Sonia Gandhi had once taken away. Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said that Pandit Nehru’s documents are not the personal property of any family, but the property of the country. He revealed at Now the government has asked for those boxes back. The Culture Minister has asked in simple words – What is there in these boxes, which is being hidden from the country?
Documents are not ‘missing’, but in ‘possession’
In a detailed post on social media platform ‘X’, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat refuted reports that the Nehru Papers have gone ‘missing’ from PMML. Shekhawat clarified that the word missing is used when the place of existence of something is unknown. But in this case, the government and the country know very well where and with whom those documents are. Shekhawat wrote, Nehru papers are not missing. It is known where and under whose authority they are. 51 boxes containing papers related to Jawaharlal Nehru were taken back from PMML by the Gandhi family in 2008. This statement makes it clear that during the UPA government, when Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister at the Center and Sonia Gandhi was the UPA Chairperson, under a process these documents were removed from the government records and went to the family.
Letters sent in January and July, but no response
The most important aspect of this controversy is that the government is no longer in a mood to remain silent. The Culture Minister revealed that the PMML administration has approached the Gandhi family several times to get these documents back. In the year 2025 itself, official letters were sent to Sonia Gandhi and her family twice – first in January and then in July. In these letters, it was requested that those historical documents, which are very important from the point of view of research and history, should be handed over to the museum. But, according to the government, no positive response was received to these letters nor were the documents returned. The government has termed the arguments being given for not returning the documents as inconsistent and unacceptable.
