Dehradun: There has been a big change regarding earthquake risk in India. Recently, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has released a new earthquake design code and updated seismic zonation map. In this new map, for the first time the entire Himalayan region has been placed in the most risky Zone-VI, after which now the entire area of Uttarakhand has also been included in the most risky areas.
Let us tell you that the work of seismic zoning mapping is done by BIS. He said that the biggest change has been made in the new map regarding the Himalayan region. Earlier, Uttarakhand was divided into two zones, in which Dharchula, Munsiyari and Uttarkashi were in Zone-5 and Dehradun, Rishikesh, Kotdwar were in Zone-4. Based on the new data, now the entire state has been included in Zone-6.
When was the map made for the first time
The first earthquake map of India was prepared by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in 1935. The country was then divided into three categories – severe, mild and moderate risk areas. After this, BIS made changes in the map from time to time. Six zones were created in 1962, seven zones in 1966 and five zones (I to V) in 1970. But old maps were based only on areas where earthquakes had occurred before.

Danger level as per new zone
, Zone II: Very low risk, 11% area.
, Zone III: Moderate danger, 30% area.
, Zone IV: High danger, 18% area.
, Zone V: Very high risk, 11% of the area.
, Zone VI: Most at risk, entire Himalayan region.
After this change, a new era has started in construction, urban planning and infrastructure security in Uttarakhand. Now engineers and urban planners will not depend on old estimates, but safety standards will be implemented on scientific basis.
