Fenugreek Cultivation: These farmers of Jamshedpur are earning big money by growing fenugreek in small space. He says that it fetches a high price in the market and can be harvested again and again. This is an example that more profitable farming can be done even with less land.
Jamshedpur. As the winter season approaches, the demand for green vegetables increases rapidly, especially fenugreek. Fenugreek parathas, greens and vegetables change the taste of every home and that is why its demand is always high in the markets. In view of this increasing demand, farmer Ramkumar Kushwaha, living in rural area of Jamshedpur, started fenugreek cultivation in his three katta land at a cost of only Rs 2000. This crop obtained at low cost and with less effort is giving them continuous profits today.
Great demand in the market, good price
Ramkumar says that in the winter season, fenugreek is being sold in the market sometimes for Rs 60 and sometimes for Rs 70 per kg. Its price in retail is even higher, whereas in the wholesale market also it is being sold at Rs 40 to 50 per kg. This is the reason why despite the costs being very low, their income has remained consistently good. From three katha land, he is extracting a new consignment every 10–12 days, which directly means that he is getting a net profit of at least Rs 8000 to Rs 10,000 in the entire season of December and January.
There is difficulty in this work
Irrigation and weed control are considered to be the biggest difficulties in this entire process, but Ramkumar has found a solution to this also. He has installed a small motor system in his farm, which provides equal amount of water to the entire farm with just the press of a button. With this system, not only time is being saved, but fenugreek leaves are also growing greener, due to which their demand in the market has increased further. With proper supply of water and timely weeding, both the production and quality of fenugreek are improving.
Harvesting happens again and again
Ramkumar says that the most special thing about fenugreek is that it grows quickly and can be harvested again and again. Once the seeds are sown, the first harvest takes place in about 25–30 days and after that new leaves emerge every 8–10 days. This is the reason why it is considered one of the most beneficial vegetables for small farmers.
big income from small land
There is always a high demand for fresh and locally grown fenugreek in the local markets of Jamshedpur, so Ramkumar never faced any problem in selling his entire crop. Due to low cost, fast production and consistent profits, he is now planning to further increase the area of fenugreek in the next season. His beginning has also become an inspiration for the nearby farmers that if proper planning and technology is used properly then good earning is possible even from small land.
