It does not require much space for this.
Amidst the rapidly increasing urbanization, farming on the terrace or balcony has become the need of the hour. This not only makes the house greener, but also makes fresh and chemical-free vegetables easily available. Farming on the rooftop reduces mental stress and also benefits the environment. In limited space and busy lifestyle, this method works to connect people with nature. The special thing is that it does not require much land or heavy arrangements.
Kaushal Kishore Jaiswal, an environmentalist from Palamu district, told Local18 that people have been growing plants in pots for a long time. The pots are strong and also look attractive. Soil, manure and plants can be kept in these in a controlled manner. Pots are considered very useful for flowers and ornamental plants. They contribute a lot in enhancing the beauty of the terrace or balcony and it is also easy to move the plants from one place to another.
He said that however, farming in pots also has some disadvantages. The pots are heavy, due to which there is a problem of weight while keeping them on the terrace. There is also a risk of breakage. In case of improper drainage of water, there may be problem of rot in the roots. Apart from this, the pots get hot quickly in summer, which affects the growth of plants. The cost is also relatively high, especially if a large number of trees are to be planted.

In view of these problems, grow bags have now emerged as a modern and indigenous solution. These are made from strong cloth, jute or thick plastic. Being light, they can be easily placed anywhere on the terrace, balcony or courtyard. Plants are grown directly by filling soil and manure in the grow bag, thereby eliminating the need for pots.
Expensive options for grow bags are not necessary. Empty compost bags, old packets of flour or rice can also be used as grow bags. Just make small holes in the bottom and sides, so that water can drain out. This method is very beneficial for those doing low-cost gardening and also makes proper use of household waste.
He said that the biggest feature of grow bags is that you can grow vegetables, fruits and flowers in them. Along with vegetables like tomato, chilli, brinjal, coriander, spinach, fruit plants like strawberry and lemon also grow well. The roots get a chance to breathe freely, due to which the plants grow faster and production is better.
Water drainage is better in grow bags, due to which water does not accumulate in the roots. Also, air flow is maintained and moisture remains balanced. Its advantage is that the plants fall ill less and their roots become stronger. Water consumption also reduces, which is a great need in today’s times.
Taking care of plants in grow bags is easy. You can decide yourself which fertilizer and which pesticide to use. Chemical-free farming is encouraged and regular hard work is also required. This is why grow bags are becoming the best and practical option for gardening on the terrace or balcony today.
