Traditional method learned from ancestors
Khalsay told Local 18 that he saw his ancestors doing this technique and learned it from them. In earlier times, when modern machines were not available, this method was most popular for cleaning paddy. This method requires both experience and hard work, which is gradually decreasing in today’s generation.
Starts with oxen and tour
Khalsai told that the process of cleaning paddy first starts with the help of oxen. The paddy straw is threshed by making the bulls run the wheel, due to which the grains are separated. After this the paddy is collected and prepared for the next process.
Complete cleaning is done by blowing with soup.
Khalsai told that after threshing, the paddy is kept in a bowl and blown in the air. During this, chaff and light garbage get separated and only clean paddy remains at the bottom. Khalsai says that with this method the paddy gets completely cleaned and there is no adulteration in it.
Machines came, but trust in tradition
Khalsai said that even though many modern machines for cleaning paddy are available in the market today, he still considers the traditional method better. According to him, cleaning is done by machines, but the quality and purity of the paddy blown by Supa is different and this is the identity of us tribals.
