External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Wednesday and the two leaders jointly attended the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Hanimadhu International Airport project. Jaishankar is on a three-day visit to Maldives and Sri Lanka. Jaishankar said at the ceremony that the launch of the Hanimadhu International Airport Development Project is a “historic milestone” in the strong India-Maldives development partnership.
He tweeted, ‘I am honored to have met President Solih of Maldives. Congratulated him personally on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Progress was assessed in our bilateral cooperation, which led to transformative projects. In another tweet, he said, “Attained the foundation stone laying ceremony of Hanimadhu International Airport Development Project along with President Solih, his ministers and local leaders.” Jaishankar said that India’s partnership with Maldives is based on the objective of working together for each other’s welfare and interests.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said that India and Maldives are good neighbors and strong partners and both countries have a shared responsibility for regional peace and security. Jaishankar, who is here on the first leg of his three-day visit to Maldives and Sri Lanka, said this after “fruitful discussions” with Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid. Jaishankar is on a visit to these countries to further expand bilateral relations with India’s two major maritime neighbors.
After the meeting with Shahid, Jaishankar said in a joint press conference, ‘We are good neighbours. We are strong partners. We have mutually invested for growth and progress. However, at the same time, we also have a shared responsibility for regional peace and security. He said that the security partnership between the two countries is also getting stronger.
