New Delhi: China’s overall population has registered a decline for the first time in the last six decades. The National Bureau of Statistics reported that there were 850,000 fewer people in China at the end of 2022 than in the previous year. The main factors for the decline in population are the increasing number of elderly people and the decline in the birth rate. China is believed to have last recorded a population decline during the Great Leap Forward in the late 1950s, when Mao Zedong’s devastating campaign for collective farming and industrialization began. Due to this campaign, there was a large scale famine in China, in which lakhs of people were killed.
