This month is considered to be the best time to improve the quality of soil to strengthen the roots of plants. By aerating the soil by light digging, plants are able to absorb nutrients better and their roots can easily withstand the pressure of winter.

Giving excess water to plants in winter sometimes proves harmful. In this season the soil remains wet for a long time, hence it is necessary to increase the interval of irrigation. Water given in small quantities as per requirement protects the roots of plants from rotting and increases their lifespan.

December is an alert month for those who keep plants in pots. Keeping the pots near the walls to protect them from cold winds or covering them with a light cover protects the plants from cold shock. This does not affect their flowering cycle either.

Organic fertilizer given in small quantities in December gradually nourishes the plants which supports their growth process in winter. Natural fertilizers like cow dung, compost or vermicompost strengthen the plants without any chemical effect.
