In winter, the body temperature naturally decreases, due to which cold, cough, phlegm and joint pain start increasing. In such a situation, dry ginger i.e. dry ginger works like a natural medicine. In Ayurveda, it is counted among the most effective medicines for winter. It produces heat in the body and strengthens the immune system, thereby providing protection from seasonal diseases.
Dry ginger is made by drying ginger and its nature is considered hot. Compared to ginger, it has more stimulating, digestive and anti-inflammatory properties. Dry ginger contains elements like gingerol and shoyagol, which provide rapid relief from cold, cough and pain. It is considered very effective in removing phlegm accumulated in the body, improving digestion and increasing blood circulation.
Palamu district’s Ayurveda expert Shiv Kumar Pandey told Local 18 that dry ginger can be consumed in many ways – with tea, decoction, hot water, milk or honey. The simplest way is to drink lukewarm water mixed with a pinch of dry ginger in the morning on an empty stomach. Adding it to tea and boiling it is also effective. While making decoction, mixing basil, black pepper and jaggery and drinking it further increases its effect. Keep in mind that the quantity of dry ginger should always be limited.

According to Ayurveda, excessive quantity of dry ginger can increase the heat in the body a lot. Therefore, it should not be taken more than 1 to 2 grams (a pinch) daily. Half a teaspoon of decoction is sufficient. Give only a pinch to children. People who suffer from excessive heat or acidity should consume dry ginger only in limited quantities.
The most common problems in winter are blocked nose, cough and phlegm. Dry ginger gives fast relief from all these problems. It melts the mucus accumulated in the body and expels it and also reduces the swelling of the throat. The mixture of dry ginger and honey is considered very effective in cough. Inhaling its steam also helps in opening the nose and provides relief in breathing.
Dry ginger strengthens the digestive system and removes problems like gas, indigestion and constipation. In cold weather, digestion becomes weak and heavy food is not digested properly. In such a situation, dry ginger keeps the stomach warm and digests the food faster. Drinking lukewarm water mixed with a pinch of dry ginger after meals immediately improves digestion and makes the stomach feel light.
Joint pain and swelling increases in winter. Dry ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, which provide relief from arthritis, muscle pain and back pain. Applying paste of dry ginger or boiling it in oil and massaging it reduces the pain. Regular consumption in the form of tea or decoction also brings warmth to the body and the pain gradually starts reducing.
Dry ginger is extremely beneficial, but in some situations it should be consumed with caution. Those suffering from acidity, stomach burning, high blood pressure or pregnant women should take it in limited quantity or on the advice of the doctor. Taking excessive amounts may cause excessive heat, burning sensation or dizziness in the body. Therefore, always take it in small quantities and according to your nature.
