DehradunThe prolonged dry weather in Uttarakhand is now becoming a big challenge for common people, Due to lack of rain, the level of air pollution in the plains of Uttarakhand is increasing towards dangerous category, while from the mountains to the plains, “dry cold” has increased the problems of the people, Due to fog in the plains and frost on the mountains, many road accidents are happening and people’s problems are increasing,
Dehradun’s air became poisonous
The increasing pollution in Dehradun has increased the concern. Dehradun was once known for its clean climate but these days it is facing the brunt of pollution. According to the latest data, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Dehradun has been recorded above 200 in many areas and close to 300 in some sensitive centers (like Doon University area). Due to lack of rain for a long time, dust particles and smoke have settled in the lower surface of the atmosphere. Due to haze and smog, respiratory patients, elderly and children are facing difficulty in breathing.
‘Yellow alert’ of fog in the plains
According to scientists of Meteorological Center Dehradun (IMD), the situation in the plains may worsen further in the coming days. The department has issued a yellow alert of dense fog for the plain districts including Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar. Due to dense fog, visibility may be significantly reduced in the morning and night, which is likely to affect road traffic as well as air and rail services. Interestingly, these days, more cold is being felt in the plains than in the mountains, because due to fog the heat of the sun is not able to reach the ground.
Dry cold is not only harmful for health but also for crops.
The outbreak of ‘dry cold’ continues in the hilly and plain areas of Uttarakhand. Due to lack of rain and snowfall, a huge drop in temperature is being recorded. “There is a possibility of damage to Rabi crops due to frost in the mountains, while in the plains, cases of viral diseases and skin related problems are increasing due to lack of moisture”. The Meteorological Department estimates that the weather in the state will remain mainly dry till December 20. However, there is a possibility of light rain and snowfall in the higher Himalayan areas like Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Pithoragarh around December 21, which may provide some relief from the dry cold. In view of the worsening air, avoid morning walks and use a mask. Use fog lights while driving during fog.
According to the information received from the Meteorological Department, today the weather will be dry in all the districts of the state, while there is a possibility of dense fog in some places in the plains of Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, Pauri and Dehradun districts. There is a possibility of cold day conditions at some places in Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar. In Dehradun today too, the sky is likely to be clear to partly cloudy. There is a possibility of fog in the morning and evening. Today the maximum temperature of Dehradun is expected to be 25 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is expected to be 10 degrees Celsius.
