Sweet Pongal Recipe: The traditional sweet Pongal dish of South India is not only delicious in winter, but also gives warmth and energy to the body. This dish, which is considered special in offering to God, is made from rice, pulses and jaggery, which is very beneficial for health and is very much liked during festivals as well as in cold days.
Hyderabad: Pongal is a traditional South Indian sweet made especially in winter. It is prepared from rice and pulses and is not only considered sacred for offering to God, but it also provides warmth to the body from within. Just like rice and milk kheer, there is a different and easy way of making sweet Pongal, its easy recipe.
Ingredients to make Sweet Pongal
half cup rice
2-3 spoons moong dal
Half cup jaggery (or jaggery powder)
2-3 spoons desi ghee
4-5 raisins
4-5 cashews
4-5 almonds (finely chopped)
half teaspoon cardamom powder
1 pinch nutmeg (ground)
1 glass water
How to make Sweet Pongal
Heat some coconut oil or ghee in a pan, add moong dal and rice and fry well till it turns light brown. After frying, let the mixture cool down.

Put the roasted rice-lentil mixture in a pressure cooker or heavy bottom pan, add 1 glass of water to it and mix well. Close the pressure cooker and let it cook for two whistles. If cooking in a pan, cook until the rice and dal become completely soft.
Add jaggery, spices and garnish
Open the cooker and add jaggery in it. Lower the gas flame and keep stirring well till the jaggery dissolves completely. Now add cardamom powder, chopped cashews, almonds, raisins and nutmeg powder and mix well. If you want, you can add some more ghee. Serve hot sweet Pongal. It can be eaten as an offering to God or for breakfast to keep warm in winters.
