But have you ever wondered what effect this habit has on the body and its metabolism? Experts say that if you occasionally eat food while standing, it does not cause any special problem, but if it becomes your habit then it can gradually affect digestion, appetite and the way the body processes food. After all, what effect does eating while standing regularly have on our body? Let us know about this from the doctor.
What happens if you eat while standing?
In the news of Indian Express, Dr. Ambreen Sheikh, Chief Dietitian of KIMS Hospital, Pune, says that people often do this in a hurry. Or when people are under stress, there is tension in their mind to do some other work, then they do this. He told that this habit affects eating behavior, appetite control and digestive health. When you eat while standing, your body remains in go-mode and the nervous system remains slightly active. But you should keep in mind that digestion works best when the body is in a calm and sitting position. But when you eat while standing, food passes through the stomach faster, leaving less time to feel satisfied. As a result, you can eat more while standing than normal food but you do not even realize it. This may increase your weight.
Problems eating while standing
There is another problem with eating while standing. When you eat while standing, you chew much less. Ambreen said that people often take larger mouthfuls and chew less while standing or eating quickly. When you chew food less, the intestines have to be more active to break it down in the stomach. This process takes more time and by then more acid is produced. This can cause the problem of acid reflux i.e. acidity. At the same time, it can cause flatulence. There is a feeling of heaviness in the stomach. Metabolism is also affected by this. The body releases hormones like ghrelin and leptin to control hunger and satiety. These signals become weaker when you eat while distracted or on the go. Over time, this natural cycle of hunger and satiety becomes disrupted, which can lead to problems like increased cravings, overeating, and sudden drops in energy. In some people, especially those who have acidity problems, eating while standing can increase the problem of reflux because the food does not stay properly in the stomach and due to gravity quickly moves towards the intestines.
So how should one eat food?
Dr. Ambreen told that the better way to eat should be what you know. Everyone should eat while sitting. One should not eat in haste. Eat slowly and feel the food completely. Enjoy every bite of food. By sitting in a comfortable posture, the stomach activates its digestive enzymes properly. Therefore, eat while sitting comfortably. Do not entangle yourself in anything while eating. enjoy eating. Do not use TV or mobile while eating. Don’t eat fast. Eat slowly. By doing this, digestion of food will improve and metabolism will be boosted.
