Women Sleep More Than Men: It is often debated that women need more sleep than men. Many people consider it right, while some people call it wrong. However, research has revealed that there are some differences in the sleeping patterns of women and men. In women, sleep quality is affected due to hormonal changes, periods, pregnancy and menopause. Women’s sleep is often interrupted, due to which they need more rest.
Men and Women Sleeping Hours: There are many differences in the health of women and men. From hormones to food and sleep needs are different between males and females. For years there has been debate on the issue of whether women need more sleep than men. Many times women themselves feel that they do not get enough sleep at night or they feel very tired during the day. Many researches show that there are some subtle differences in the sleep patterns of women and men. According to sleep experts, everyone should take 7 to 9 hours of sleep every day. However, in some conditions, women need more sleep, so that their body can function properly.
It is a physically and mentally changing time for pregnant women. During this period, sleep is greatly affected due to reasons like back pain, hormonal changes, frequent bathroom visits, anxiety and baby’s movements. Many researches have revealed that about 40% of women experience symptoms of insomnia in the third trimester of pregnancy. This is the reason why women may need more sleep or naps during the day than usual during pregnancy. After delivery, women feel more tired due to the disturbed sleep of the child. In such a situation, they need to get maximum sleep.
During menopause, estrogen, progesterone and melatonin levels in women’s body start decreasing, which causes frequent problems in sleep. Many women face problems like hot flashes, night sweats, restlessness and insomnia. In this stage, the quality of sleep reduces significantly and many women feel more tired and weak during the day. At such times, it is natural for the body to need extra rest.
Studies show that on average women sleep about 10 to 12 minutes more than men. Although this difference is very small. Interestingly, women often report the quality of their sleep as poor, whereas in sleep lab tests, their sleep was found to be deeper and better than that of men. This can also happen because women wake up more often at night due to children or family, due to which their sleep gets disrupted. As a result, they compensate for their lack of sleep by taking occasional naps during the day.
