With the onset of winter, special rules of Ayurveda regarding food habits and lifestyle become important in Indian tradition. Dr. Nagendra Narayan Sharma, a well-known Ayurveda physician and chiropractor of Chhattisgarh, has told a special abstinence for the month of Margashirsha (Agahan). According to him, cumin should not be consumed even by mistake in this month, because it can increase many health related problems.
Dr. Sharma explains that in Indian tradition, there has been an ancient practice of following Ritucharya i.e. diet according to the seasons. This is the tradition of a healthy lifestyle inherited by us. The month of Aghaan falls in Hemant Ritu, when cool winds blow and the atmosphere also becomes cool. During this period, the accumulation of phlegm in the body and the severity of Vata dosha increases. Due to the imbalance of Vata and Kapha, the possibility of joint pain, swelling in joints, asthma, cough, cold and skin related diseases increases. However, in this month our digestive fire becomes intense, due to which the digestive power remains excellent.
Consuming honey is especially beneficial
Dr. Sharma advises that in such a situation, we should consume food containing sour and salty juices which provide energy and nutrition to the body. Consuming fatty food and honey is especially beneficial in this month. Apart from this, we should avoid very cold, dry and light food which increases gas and food items containing pungent, bitter and astringent juice. In particular, consumption of cumin, tamarind, moth dal, cucumber, melon and watermelon is completely prohibited in this month. These things can increase health related problems.
