New Delhi. Direct train service from Jammu to Srinagar will start by the end of this year. Indian Railways officials have indicated that this historic launch could happen before the end of the year. The launch of a direct train between these two cities will be a major milestone in rail connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of the country. At present, Vande Bharat train is running between Katra city of Reasi district and Kashmir.
According to Indian Railways, all the ongoing operational and redevelopment work in Jammu division will be completed by November 30. As soon as this work reaches the final stage, a decision will be taken to run the train directly from Jammu station to Srinagar. Railway officials said that earlier the pace of the project had slowed down due to the sudden flood. But now Railways is working with full strength and efforts are being made to complete all the targets within the stipulated time.
Jammu station is being transformed
An official said, “Two types of work are going on at Jammu station, civil structure and track related work. The track work is almost complete while new platforms, modern facilities, waiting area and station building are also in the final stages. It is expected that all the work will be completed by the end of November. The progress is being continuously monitored to establish the Jammu-Srinagar connectivity at the earliest.”
USBRL was India’s most challenging rail mission
The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project is called an engineering marvel of the Indian Railways. This entire project passes through the high hills of the Himalayas. The world’s highest railway bridge, Chenab Bridge and India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, Anji Khad Bridge, have been built on this route. Both these engineering marvels have given India a new identity on the global rail map. The rail line is now fully operational, providing all-year round weather connectivity and boosting socio-economic development in the region.
