New Delhi. Amidst the demand for extradition of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the sourness in India-Bangladesh relations, Bangladesh High Commissioner to India M Riyaz Hamidullah gave a big statement on Monday. He said that the relationship between India and Bangladesh is not governed by the mentality of ‘zero-sum game’.
Hamidullah said, “Challenges are natural in the relationship between two vastly populated and geographically connected countries, sometimes sensitive issues also arise. But Bangladesh has always believed in dialogue and negotiations, based on pragmatism and belief in a shared future. This is not a cliché.”
He said, “Bangladesh and India’s relations are deep and multi-layered… We are linked by shared history, shared culture and shared geography. The people of our two countries are naturally bound to each other. It is a relationship that is rooted in mutual respect and trust, and not driven by a ‘zero-sum game’ mentality.”
Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India said, “Since the uncertain and extremely challenging days of Bangladesh’s independence, India’s cooperation and commitment has been extremely important in carrying forward this framework of trust and understanding. This is what I and my colleagues across India believe in and work with utmost pragmatism to ensure peace, stability and prosperity in Bangladesh and India. This is the path on which Bangladesh wishes to move towards an enduring friendship and partnership, so that the challenges and Opportunities can be taken advantage of.”
