Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chairperson Bibi Jagir Kaur has appealed to the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to ban the release of the web series ‘Grahan’. The web series Eclipse is going to be streamed on June 24 on the OTT platform DisneyPlus Hot Star.
Addressing the reporters, he said that a Sikh character has been portrayed in an objectionable manner in the web series titled ‘Gran’ based on the 1984 Sikh genocide. In the web series, a Sikh character is being accused of Sikh genocide which is highly condemnable and fabricated. Addressing the press, he said that Nirpreet Kaur, a witness to the massacre, has sent a legal notice to Ajay G Rai, the producer of the ‘Grahan’ web series, and Sunil Ryan, the head and chairman of Disney+Hotstar. The SGPC also supports this notice.
He said that through this web series, work is being done to sprinkle salt on the wounds of Sikhs, which hurts the sentiments of Sikhs. Such films also hurt the communal harmony in the society. Therefore, the government should make strict Information Technology (IT) rules to curb such sensitive and objectionable tendencies.
It is shown in the trailer of ‘Ghan’ that the Sikh riots took place after the assassination of the country’s first woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The investigation of these riots has been going on for many years. But the result is not out. In the year 2016, Ranchi Police Commissioner orders actress Zoya Hussain, playing the role of an IPS officer, to investigate it.
Regarding the series, users on social media say that the sentiments of Sikhs are being hurt by this. At the same time, some people say that efforts are being made to defame Sikhs. While users are questioning its approval from the censor board.
This web series tries to show that the Sikhs themselves committed the massacre in 1984. It is an attempt to openly defame the Sikhs. The whole world knows that Sikhs are a great nation and will remain so.#BanGrahanWebSeries#Retweet pic.twitter.com/bPihkqkMvJ

Through this series #SikhGenocide1984
Attempts are being made to give a different direction to the Sikhs, which is not acceptable to any Sikh.

Some issues are so delicate that touching them is like scratching a wound. As a victim of the 1984 Sikh genocide family, I demand a ban on this web series.#BanGrahanWebSeries pic.twitter.com/1SIiP3ONTt
