Two days of severe cold wave in January, highest in 17 years
New Delhi: Cold is at its peak in India. There is a shivering cold in North India. It is becoming difficult for people to get out in the cold in the capital Delhi. According to the data of the India Meteorological Department, cold wave was recorded in Delhi for the third consecutive day in the second phase on Wednesday. This is the eighth day so far this month, which is the highest during January in 15 years and the second highest after 31 years.
However, from today i.e. Thursday, there is a possibility of a decrease in the cold wave and the Meteorological Department has predicted light rain or drizzle. On Wednesday, Delhi’s base station Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 2.6 degrees Celsius, which was 0.2 degrees higher than Tuesday’s minimum temperature. The minimum temperature was recorded at 2.2 degree Celsius at Lodhi Road, 2.3 degree Celsius at Ridge and 3.2 degree Celsius at Aya Nagar.
Last year there was no cold wave
According to TOI, the meteorological department’s data shows that between 1992 and 2023, the maximum number of cold wave days in January was recorded at 12 days in 2008. Two phases of cold wave have been observed in January this year. The first phase from 5 to 9 January and the second from 16 to 18 January. Seven-seven days of cold wave were observed in January 1997 and 1998 while six such days were observed in January 2021 as well. Last year i.e. in 2022, no day of cold wave was recorded in January.
When is the announcement of cold wave
Let us tell you that the Meteorological Department declares a cold wave when the minimum temperature is four or more degrees below normal or when the minimum temperature is less than 4 degrees Celsius. A ‘severe’ cold wave day is declared when the minimum temperature is less than two degrees Celsius or it is 6.5 degrees or more below normal.

January this year has already seen two days of severe cold wave, which is the highest in the last 17 years. Earlier in January 2006 also two days of severe cold wave were recorded. There is a possibility of an increase in the minimum temperature due to the effect of Western Disturbance. According to the IMD forecast, the minimum temperature is likely to go up to five degrees Celsius on Thursday with the possibility of very light rain or drizzle at night.
According to IMD, “Due to change in wind direction, there is a possibility of an increase of 3-5 degree Celsius in the minimum temperature in many parts of Delhi on Thursday and Friday. Due to the second Western Disturbance, the weather of Delhi may be affected on 23 and 24 January. During this, there are chances of light rain or thundershowers in Delhi. The possibility of strong winds has also been expressed in the city.
