IGI Airport: Don’t know how many years, all the airport security agencies and airlines have been making the same request to their passengers, but there are some passengers who do not take the name of their ‘louse crawling in the ear’. As a result, taking advantage of the carelessness of these unsuspecting passengers, some loaders become successful in carrying out the theft of check-in baggage.
Actually, the whole matter is about stealing valuables from check-in baggage ie registered baggage. Security agencies and airlines have been asking passengers not to keep valuables such as cash, jewelry and electronics inside check-in baggage. Always keep these valuables in hand baggage to ensure proper care of the baggage and avoid any untoward incident.
Despite this, many passengers keep their valuables in check-in baggage. At the time of baggage loading in the aircraft, some loaders clean their hands on these valuables as soon as they get a chance. After which, passengers are seen making hue and cry all around. On January 14, the IGI Airport police arrested eight such loaders who used to steal valuables from passengers’ check-in baggage.

According to DCP Ravi Kumar Singh of IGI Airport, the eight accused have stolen goods and jewelery worth more than Rs 10 lakh from passengers’ baggage within the last few months. Jewelery worth lakhs of rupees, US dollars and cash have been recovered from their possession. Items recovered include gold bangles, lockets, ear tops, chains, nettles, Apple I-phones, Apple watches, expensive watches and iPods.
This is how the airport police laid their trap
DCP Ravi Kumar Singh said that the airport police prepared a joint strategy with the vigilance staff and security teams of various airlines to curb the incidents of theft from check-in baggage. As part of the strategy, strict surveillance was initiated on ground handling staff working in baggage breakup area and baggage makeup area and loaders transferring baggage to aircraft.
Soon the positive results of this monitoring were found. On January 11, a team of IGI Airport police with the help of airlines vigilance staff detained a loader named Deepak Pal. This loader was attempting to steal from a passenger’s registered check-in baggage. Investigation was started against accused Deepak Pal by registering a case under section 379/511 of IPC at IGI Police Station.

Accused Deepak made many revelations during interrogation
During interrogation, accused Deepak Pal told that he has been working as a loader in a ground handling agency since 2018. His salary is only 18 thousand rupees and he was not able to meet his needs in this low salary. So, as soon as he got a chance, he started stealing small things from the luggage of the passengers. After some time, he came in contact with 7 other loaders and ground handling staff from other airlines and agencies.
Since all of them were living close to each other and working almost the same shift, they formed a gang and started carrying out thefts in a professional manner. On Deepak’s tip, the airport police arrested all the seven accused and recovered a large quantity of stolen goods from their possession. Now the airport police is engaged in the exercise of identifying those who buy stolen goods.

Used to execute the incident in this way
According to the airport police, as per the procedure, the check-in baggage of passengers is first loaded onto a trolley in the terminal and taken to the airsite and off loaded near the aircraft. Here the loaders take out the baggage from the trolley and load it into the aircraft. He told that the loaders search the baggage while loading, off-loading or keeping it in the aircraft. They clean their hands on the baggage in which the goods were found.
He used to hide the stolen goods from the passengers’ check-in baggage in lockers and other places inside the airport. Later, whenever he got a chance, he would hide the stolen goods in his undergarments and walk out of the airport. Working in a very professional manner, they used to collect the stolen goods at one place before disposing of them. After distributing the goods, they were sold in the market at throwaway prices.
