Deepfake Scam Alert: Now even fraud has become high-tech in the digital world. Fraudsters are using such AI tricks that they can trick you by using your voice or the face of someone close to you. The video and audio appear so real that the difference between real and fake disappears. If you also think that ‘no one can fool me’ then wait, deepfake scam is ready to test you. Let us know how to identify deepfake scam and how we can avoid it.
How do deepfake fraud work?
The fraudsters first copy the voice or video of a known friend, relative, office mate or bank employee. Then they call or send messages in that name and pressurize them to transfer the money immediately. Since the voice seems real, many people get deceived.
If you get a sudden demand for money, stop and check.
If someone suddenly asks you for money and the voice seems familiar, then wait for a second. Cross-check by calling or messaging the person on your behalf. Fraudsters often apply pressure like sending it immediately, so moving slowly is the biggest protection.
Avoid payment leaks and screen sharing
Through deepfake calls, fraudsters send you a link or ask you to share the screen. By doing this they can access your PIN, SMS or banking app. Do not click on any unknown link and never share your screen. Real banks never say this to customers.
Do not tell PIN and OTP to anyone
Remember that your PIN and OTP are your personal information. Telling this to anyone is a direct threat. No matter how genuine the call seems, banks never ask for PIN/OTP. Do not accept any collect request or payment request without checking.
Be aware of new frauds
As technology changes, so does fraud. Always read fraud alert information on bank apps, notifications and trusted news sources. The more you know, the easier you will be able to recognize deception.
If the inner voice says – something is wrong, then disconnect the call
If the language, voice or way of talking on the call seems even strange, be alert immediately. Trust your instincts, disconnect the call and contact the real person yourself. One minute of vigilance can save from big loss.
