Purnia: Vegetable cultivation becomes a big challenge for farmers during the winter season. Due to cold, the risk of frost in the fields, spread of pests and many diseases increases. In such a situation the production of vegetables reduces. But if farmers take some important precautions, then better yield can be achieved even in winter.
Dr. Vikas Kumar, agricultural scientist of Bhola Paswan Shastri Agricultural College, Purnia, says that winter season is the most difficult time for vegetable farmers. Farmers have to deal with problems like frost, fungus, pests and lack of soil moisture. In such a situation, if farming is done with caution, good yields can be obtained.
Dr. Vikas Kumar told that in this season farmers grow vegetables like potato, cabbage, peas, radish, beetroot, ghee, greens, broccoli, cabbage and tomato. But as the cold increases, the risk of diseases in these crops also increases. Therefore, farmers should adopt right methods from the beginning.
What things should be kept in mind?
The biggest problem is lack of moisture in the soil. Due to cold and westerly wind, the moisture in the soil evaporates rapidly. In such a situation, farmers should pay attention to maintaining the moisture of the field. Keep proper distance between the plants in the field so that air and light come properly. By maintaining proper distance, plants do not fall on each other and the risk of blight is also reduced.
Adopt these methods for better production
Due to cold, fog and frost, blight disease spreads rapidly in potatoes and tomatoes. To avoid this, farmers should select good quality seeds from the beginning. The seeds should be treated with Tychoderma and sown. This makes the plants stronger and the effect of diseases is reduced.
Soil treatment is also very important. Minimize the use of chemical fertilizers in the fields and increase the use of organic fertilizers like rotten cow dung and vermi compost. Organic fertilizer improves the quality of the soil and also reduces the incidence of insect diseases. Spraying of neem based oil instead of chemical medicines is considered to be the safest and most effective way to protect against pests. This significantly reduces the risk of pests and diseases on crops.
the most important thing
Do not plant the same type of vegetable in the same field every year. By growing crops in rotation, the strength of the soil is maintained and production also increases. Overall, by adopting proper preparation, organic farming methods and scientific advice, farmers can get good yield of vegetables even in winter.
