Faridabad: Farmers of Manjhawali village of Faridabad are badly stranded these days. A few months ago, the flood in Yamuna washed away all his hard work. Months of hard work and money were wasted, the crops were washed away and till now most of the farmers have not received even a single penny from the government in the name of compensation. Only a few people in the village have received some help, the remaining 99% farmers are just waiting. Farming is everything here, because there is neither any factory nor any other employment here. Due to non-payment of compensation, farmers are deeply in debt.
Took loan from commission agent
Farmer Sumit Sharma told his pain while talking to Local18. Sumit himself is a resident of Manjawali. His 5 acre crop was completely destroyed in the flood. About 60 thousand rupees were spent, but now even the cost has not been recovered. Sumit said that he had invested money from home and taken a loan from the commission agent, he thought that he would repay everything when the harvest came, but the flood destroyed everything. Now again a loan had to be taken to sow wheat. Both I and my brother are dependent on farming.
flood damage
There are 10 people in the house and the responsibility of everyone is on us. Those whose loss was a little less got some compensation, but those who lost everything have not received a single rupee till date. Sumit says that at the time of flood the field was filled with 7-8 feet of water. Both varieties of paddy were completely destroyed.
Did not receive proper compensation
The suffering of farmer Rahul is also no less. Vegetables were planted in his farm for the market, but everything in the adjacent farm was washed away in the flood. Rahul said that there was hope from the government that compensation for the loss would be given. The Chief Minister had said that we will get Rs 15,000 for the loss of millet, but we got only Rs 16,000 for five acres, whereas the cost was Rs 60,000 and another Rs 70,000 were spent in preparing the field. Compensation received was only Rs 16 thousand. On top of that, there is shortage of fertilizer and black marketing in the village. A packet of DAP is available for Rs 1700, urea for Rs 350. If you don’t understand where to go. Nothing was found even in the flood of 2023. Even today only 20-30 farmers have received money.
how to run a house
The story of farmer Jagdish Sharma is also no different. He had planted paddy in 7 acres. About Rs 15 thousand per acre was spent, but everything was destroyed in the flood. Jagdish says that our family consists of 15 people. I am the only one earning. There are small children and no other support. Now I don’t understand how to manage my household expenses. The family survives on farming but this loss has increased the difficulties.
Debt burden is increasing
Farmers of Manjhawali are struggling with floods and losses year after year. Farming is their life, but every year the situation is worsening due to losses and non-payment of compensation. The debt burden is increasing and farmers are just waiting for government help. The people of the village say that whenever there is a flood in Yamuna, such devastation occurs and the wait for compensation goes on for a long time.
At this time, the farmers of Manjhawali just want that the government should give compensation as soon as possible, so that they can save their families and farms. This is the last way of relief for them, otherwise their struggle between debt and poverty will continue like this.
